PUBLIC POLICY CHANGES & INVESTMENTS
The provincial government has implemented a number of recommendations in line with our policy proposals and advocacy priorities including:
- the development of the Food Donation Act, or Good Samaritan Act, passed in 1994;
- the creation of an Ontario Child Benefit (OCB) for all low-income families in Ontario in the 2007 budget ($2.1 billion over five years);
- an improved dental care plan for low-income families in the 2008 budget ($135 million over three years);
- a new schedule of increases to the minimum wage, moving up to $10.25 in 2010;
- an investment in the rehabilitation and regeneration of social housing in the 2008 budget ($500 million loan facility and $100 million in direct capital);
- annual inflationary increases to Ontario Works (OW) and the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) in the 2007 and 2008 budget (approximately $85 million annually);
- the creation of a pilot asset building program to build savings for home ownership, business development, and education for low-income Ontarians in the 2008 budget ($10 million over four years); and
- $110,000 in funding to support the processing of pork products made available through the federal pork cull program.
In many cases, the advocacy and research work associated with these proposals has been supported, shared, or led by a number of organizations including the OAFB. Therefore, the OAFB could never take full credit for the implementation of these initiatives. We are happy to work collaboratively with a number of partners in poverty reduction across the province.
